Body

This is a big category with many different things that could be at play. What they all have in common though is that if you scored high here, it's important to check in and see if there are any physical reasons contributing to what you're experiencing.

The thing about purity culture is that we’re taught not to trust the body. When you’re taught to believe that the body and your feelings are secondary to the spirit, you can find yourself ignoring real, genuine physical complaints or contributing factors. Instead of working with your body, you might end up frustrated with it or pushing through the signals it’s giving you. It's time to pause and check in to see what your body really needs.

It's really important to think about what practitioners you might need to check in with—and then make an appointment to see them.

Does it mean there is something wrong with you? Not at all.
It just means that if you're experiencing any pain, taking any regular medications, struggling with infertility, or have a history with eating disorders, it's worth checking in with a doctor.

Some medications and treatments can affect your energy, mood, hormones, and libido. If you are experiencing abdominal or pelvic pain or discomfort, it's important you advocate strongly for yourself when getting checked out. You're perfectly within your rights to request more information on medications, treatments you're having, or ways a health issue could be interacting with your sex life. Remember, you can also take a support person with you if that would help.

Small Shifts to Start With

- CHECK IN with a doctor/trusted practioner.

- Implement SUPPORT for your physical body as needed.
- Connect to appreciation and ACCEPTANCE of your body as it is.

And a practical exercise to help you on your way.
On top of what purity culture has taught you about your body, if your body is not working how you feel it should, this can add an extra tricky layer. It's easy to feel like your body is betraying you—but it's important to remember that your body is precious and important. It's deserving of love, acceptance, and honor, even when something is not looking or working exactly as you wish it would.

So here's a practical exercise to help you shift that shame of purity culture and develop a positive relationship with your body.

Try this Body Acceptance exercise.

  1. Set aside some quiet time when you won't be disturbed. Find a comfortable place to sit or lie down.

  2. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Bring your attention to your body and notice how it feels.

  3. Starting at the top of your head, slowly scan down your body, noticing each part as you go. Pay attention to any sensations, such as tension, pleasure, or discomfort.

  4. As you scan your body, repeat the phrase "I accept and honor my body just as it is" to yourself.

  5. When you reach the bottom of your body, take a few deep breaths and notice any changes in your body or emotions.

  6. Repeat this exercise daily for a week. As you do, notice any shifts in your relationship with your body.

This exercise is about becoming more aware of your body and learning to accept and honor it just as it is. It's not about changing your body or making it something it's not. It's about creating a positive relationship with the body you have right now.
